You'll remember my cousin Seth from "Gallery
20: Thanksgiving 2001." Here, he kicks off the Thomas family's 2002
Christmas festivities with style by challenging me to the traditional gladiator-style
battle to the death, much to Aunt Marguerite's amusement. Also pictured are Uncle
Earl and Aunt Liv, doing their best to hide the disappointment as they realize that Seth
was only kidding.
Speaking of Christmas, the holiday season came early this year for my
Mother's thumb. After gaining worldwide attention for obscuring the lens on so many
www.jeffthomas.com photographs that were taken by Mom, Mom's thumb recently signed a
lucrative endorsement deal with a top thimble manufacturer. Unfortunately, the newly
famous appendage threw a "star fit" and demanded too much money to appear in
this photograph. So pictured here alongside Marguerite and me is its "stand
in," played by Dad.
Am I seeing things, or does a more-animated-than-usual Dad appear to be
goosing that unidentified behind on the right-hand side of this picture? Must have
been the "secret ingredient" in Grandma's hot apple cider that got into him!
More of the dreaded "Apple Cider Effect": Seth, before and after a sip.
A Manson Family Christmas
This might be a little bit difficult to see, but I just had to draw attention to my
all-time favorite mug, which Seth is drinking from in those photos. Zoom in and
you'll notice several senior members of the Thomas clan, photographed sometime in the
1970s, gathered around someone who you'd swear is Charles Manson [actually my Uncle Russ].
What's even scarier is that my Dad [far left] still wears this same sweater every
Christmas.
Fast-forward 25 years, and the family is much more sedate and well adjusted. Really.
And finally, in a purely unrelated development, Grandpa unwraps the
traditional Thomas holiday gift of some sort of gigantic bone saw.
"Merry Axe-Mas to all, and to all a good night!"
